Uploading custom fonts

2 min readUpdated October 28, 2026

Nahnu Fonts → Upload font adds your own font files: a brand font, a purchased font or one from any foundry. Only upload fonts you are licensed to use on the web.

Supported formats#

FormatNotes
WOFF2Recommended. The smallest format; every browser WordPress supports reads it
WOFFFine, a little larger than WOFF2
TTFOften two to three times larger than WOFF2
OTFOften two to three times larger than WOFF2

If your font came as TTF or OTF, convert it to WOFF2 before uploading, as long as your font license allows it. Fonts you upload are kept in the format you upload. If you upload several formats of the same style, each visitor’s browser uses the best one it supports.

Each file can be as large as your server’s upload limit, shown under the drop area.

Upload a new family#

  1. Leave Add to set to A new font family.
  2. Enter the Family name, for example Nahnu Display. This is the name you’ll pick in editors and use in CSS.
  3. Choose a Fallback (sans-serif, serif, monospace, cursive, system-ui or fantasy).
  4. Drop your files on Drop font files here or choose from your computer, or click to choose them. You can add all weights and styles at once.
  5. Check each file in Files to upload (see below).
  6. Review the full-width Preview, which appears once files are added.
  7. Click Save font family.

The font is saved and ready in the block editor and your page builders.

Weight, style and variable axes#

Nahnu Fonts reads each file in your browser and fills in:

  • Weight (100 to 900), from the file’s own data.
  • Style, normal or italic.
  • Variable range, for example “Variable 100–900”, when the file is a variable font. One file then covers every weight in that range.

Font files aren’t always labelled correctly, so check these before saving and correct them if needed. If a file can’t be read, you’ll see “Your browser could not read … It may be damaged.”

Add files to an existing family#

Use Add to and pick the family, or click Upload more files for this family in the font’s edit panel in the Font library.

New files are added to that family. A file with the same weight, style and format replaces the old one.

Tips#

  • Upload only the weights your design uses.
  • Prefer a variable WOFF2 file when you need three or more weights.
  • After saving, open the font’s edit panel to preload your heading style or set “Apply to” selectors.
